W-sitting

Updated: Aug 21

You've probably heard many times that "W-sitting is not good for your child".

We don't necessarily agree with the statement, and we are not alone. Dr. Peter Rosenbaum*, one of the most influential names in the Canadian Cerebral Palsy medical community, has said that many children are actually more comfortable and have more stability in that position.

We cannot agree more!

Here is the thing, when the child W-sits, it is probably easier for them to use their hands and play, as the position offers a wider base. If you try to "correct" the position and bring them to a cross-legged position, they lose stability, and the ability to use their hands is compromised (basically because they need to hold themselves).

We revised this concept in our Facebook live Q&A back in July 2019. Here is a clip of the conversation we had, but you can watch the whole session here

WeFlow´s tip for you!

Instead of "fighting" the W-sitting position, we suggest you insert a softball (like a small beach ball or pilates ball) under your child's bum to raise the position. This will add some small movement to the sitting platform and help with the development of the pelvis.
